Physical Literacy NWT
Vision
Physical Literacy NWT is committed to improving activity levels and building community engagement for all its territorial residents.
It is important to note that a person’s physical literacy reflects their environment, culture and world. It is a holistic concept, involving physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual dimensions (can we say elements or core elements).
Physical Literacy is a holistic concept that involves the following 4 core elements:
- Physical
- Building fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills in a variety of environments (on the ground in the air, on the snow and ice, in and on the water).
- Social
- Helping children and participants make and maintain healthy relationships with teammates, sport staff, coaches and volunteers.
- Emotional
- Helping participants manage emotions, nerves and anxieties.
- Cognitive
- Supporting leadership, decision making and problem solving.
- Spiritual
Engaging in sports can be a profound and personal experience, allowing for self-discovery, personal growth, and a strong sense of connection.
No one element is more important than the other – all must exist together.
