Resources to Keep Our Communities Moving

This page is your starting point for practical ways to support active, connected communities across the North. Explore guides, funding opportunities, and safe sport information, all designed to help people develop movement skills and feel a sense of belonging.

Building Respect and Understanding in Sport

Sport brings people together through shared experiences, cultural exchange, and community spirit. Our Sports/Truth and Reconciliation resources help coaches, participants, and organizations create environments honouring Indigenous traditions and perspectives while strengthening relationships across the North.

Supporting Our Athletes and Coaches

Team NT represents the spirit and talent of the Northwest Territories. We work to provide training, mentorship, and opportunities that help athletes reach their goals while staying connected to their communities. Learn more about how you can get involved and support our teams on the national stage.

Funding

Find Funding for Your Sport or Recreation Project

Local equipment grants, national programs, and other opportunities can help bring your sport and recreation ideas to life. We connect individuals, teams, and organizations with funding that removes financial barriers and makes participation possible.

Development

Learning and Growth Opportunities

Coaches, athletes, educators, and volunteers all benefit from ongoing learning that strengthens our communities. This section offers access to courses, workshops, and online tools designed to build skills and leadership in sport, recreation, and physical activity.

Mentorship

Guidance at Every Step

Mentorship connects experienced leaders with those eager to grow. Our mentorship programs provide guidance, encouragement, and knowledge-sharing that empower participants to succeed in the field, gym, and community.

True Sport

Sport with Values at the Core

True Sport is about fair play, respect, and community spirit. By following the True Sport Principles, we can ensure every game, practice, and event builds positive experiences for everyone involved.

The True Sport movement helps Canadians create safe, welcoming, and meaningful sports experiences. It’s built on seven principles that promote fairness, inclusion, and fun, which align with our vision for physical literacy across the North.

  • Go For It – Always try your best.
  • Play Fair – Respect the rules and each other.
  • Respect Others – Value all participants, on and off the field.
  • Keep It Fun – Enjoy the game and share the joy.
  • Stay Healthy – Care for your mind and body.
  • Include Everyone – Make sure no one is left out.
  • Give Back – Support your community through sport.

Long-Term Development

Building Skills for Life

Long-Term Development (LTD) is a framework that helps people of all ages enjoy sport and physical activity. By focusing on the right skills at the right time, LTD supports lifelong participation, health, and well-being.

LTD recognizes that physical literacy develops over a lifetime. It provides guidelines for introducing, growing, and refining skills in ways that are age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and fun.

Indigenous LTD

Honouring Indigenous Perspectives in Development

Indigenous LTD blends the principles of long-term development with Indigenous values, traditions, and ways of knowing. It respects the role of community, land, and culture in shaping physical activity and well-being.

This approach was created to ensure that Indigenous Peoples have access to sport and activity programs that reflect their traditions, strengths, and priorities. It’s about creating pathways where culture and movement grow together.
