What Is Physical Literacy NWT?

The simple answer is… it is all of us.

It is every coach who encourages a child to try something new. Every teacher who makes movement part of the school day. Every recreation leader who organizes community activities. Every Elder who shares traditional games and knowledge. Every volunteer, parent, official, athlete, and community member who believes that being active helps build healthier, stronger communities. Physical Literacy NWT exists to bring those people together.

Our vision is simple: to help every resident of the Northwest Territories discover the joy of movement while strengthening the connections that make our communities unique.

Being physically literate is about much more than sport. It is about having the confidence, motivation, and ability to move throughout life, whether you are hiking on the land, paddling a canoe, skating on an outdoor rink, dancing at a community celebration, playing volleyball after school, or simply going for a walk with friends.

Physical literacy includes many parts of who we are.
•Physical development through movement and skill.
•Social connections that bring people together.
•Emotional growth by building confidence and resilience.
•Cognitive development through decision making and problem solving.
•Spiritual connection to ourselves, our communities, and the land.

No one piece is more important than another. Together, they help create meaningful experiences that encourage lifelong participation in physical activity.
At Physical Literacy NWT, we believe the best ideas happen when people work together. We collaborate with schools, sport organizations, recreation leaders, Indigenous governments, municipalities, coaches, Elders, volunteers, and community champions to create opportunities for everyone to get active.

Whether you coach a team, organize a community event, teach in a classroom, lead a youth group, or simply encourage your family to spend more time outside, you are already contributing to physical literacy.

Physical Literacy NWT is here to support those efforts by sharing resources, connecting people, celebrating success stories, and helping communities create more opportunities for people to move.

Because when we work together, everyone benefits. Physical Literacy NWT is all of us, helping northern communities get active through collaboration, education, and a people-first approach.
