Beyond the Game Explores the Lasting Influence of Coaches

Coaches from across the Northwest Territories gathered virtually on October 21 for the latest session in Sport North’s Professional Development Inspiration Series. Isaac Ayiku presented “Beyond the Game: Coach the Athlete. Develop the Person. Build the Community,” an interactive session exploring transformational coaching and the lasting influence coaches can have beyond competition.

Isaac encouraged participants to think about the difference between coaching solely for performance and coaching to develop the whole person. He discussed the importance of creating safe environments, building meaningful relationships and giving athletes opportunities to make decisions, discover solutions and develop as leaders. Participants reflected on why they became coaches, the people who influenced their own journeys and what they hope athletes will remember about being coached by them. The conversation also explored the challenge of setting meaningful standards in communities with different populations, resources and sporting opportunities.

Throughout the session, Isaac reminded coaches that success cannot be measured only by scores, medals or standings. It can also be seen in an athlete’s confidence, resilience, leadership and sense of belonging, as well as the positive influence they carry into their community.

“Soccer’s Isaac Ayiku reminded us to ask why we coach and if we do it purposefully, how coaching can be transformative in a young person’s life.” – Spider Jones, Sport North

Thank you to Isaac for sharing his experience, ideas and thoughtful approach, and to everyone who participated in the conversation. The session was another reminder that coaches do more than develop athletes. They help develop people, strengthen communities and create experiences that can remain with participants long after the game has ended.
