Physical Literacy NWT is pleased to share the findings of the 2026 Multisport Games Participation Survey. The survey and accompanying communications materials were informed by survey research conducted in partnership with the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC).
The survey was designed to better understand how people experience the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Games, and North American Indigenous Games. It explored why people participate, what barriers they face, and how those experiences can help strengthen sport opportunities across the Northwest Territories.
Although the report is based on a relatively small sample and should be viewed as an initial baseline rather than a definitive picture of participation, it provides an important starting point for understanding northern multisport Games.
The findings suggest something many Northerners already experience, that community plays a central role in our sport system.
Participants identified fun, staying active, supporting their communities, and giving back as the primary reasons they continue to be involved. Many also described how the Games create friendships, mentorship opportunities, leadership experiences, and pride in representing their communities.
The report also highlights several challenges that continue to affect participation. Travel costs, financial barriers, and limited local opportunities remain the biggest obstacles for many individuals and communities.
Perhaps one of the most encouraging findings is the commitment people have to continuing their involvement. More than 80 percent of respondents indicated they intend to remain involved in future Games, often transitioning from athlete to coach, official, volunteer, or mission staff.
This report is intended to be more than a one-time snapshot. It establishes a foundation that Physical Literacy NWT hopes to build on through future surveys, allowing participation trends to be tracked over time and helping organizations make more informed decisions based on evidence. Future surveys will help strengthen the evidence base by expanding participation and tracking changes over time.
We thank everyone who participated in the survey and the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) for their partnership in conducting this research. The infographic and communications materials were developed by Physical Literacy NWT using the survey findings.
