There are moments that stay with you. Not because they are big or loud, but because they feel real. This picture from the Arctic Winter Games is one of those moments. A group of wrestling athletes, standing together, smiling, holding a simple sign that says, “Thanks Coach!” Behind that sign is so much more than a photo.
It represents early mornings, rides to practice, and quiet conversations after a tough match. It reflects someone showing up again and again, often without recognition, simply because they care. These are the moments that shape experiences in sport and physical activity, even if they are not always visible.
At the Games, we started something simple. We invited athletes to take a moment and say those two words, “Thanks Coach.” A simple idea, shaped through conversations, time shared, and the small things that make moments like this possible, like a sign handed to a group of athletes and an invitation to pause and be seen. What we found was not just gratitude. Thank you Spider.
We found stories. We found relationships built over time, trust that had grown through shared experiences, and moments where a coach believed in someone before they believed in themselves.
Physical Literacy is often described through movement skills, confidence, competence, and motivation. But underneath all of that, there is something even more important, connection. Young people do not stay involved in sport just because they learn a skill. They stay because they feel something. They feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger than themselves.
Coaches play a powerful role in that journey. Not by being perfect or having all the answers, but by being present. By creating spaces where it is okay to try, okay to make mistakes, and okay to grow at your own pace. This is where confidence begins. This is where motivation becomes something that lasts. This is where movement becomes meaningful.
The Arctic Winter Games reminded us that development is not always about results or performance. Sometimes it is about small moments, a shared laugh, a quiet word of encouragement, or simply being there. Sometimes it is about noticing. Noticing the effort, the growth, and each other.
Across the North, there are countless coaches, volunteers, teachers, and leaders who give their time, energy, and heart to create these experiences. And sometimes, behind a simple idea, there is also someone who took the time to help shape it, to support it, and to make sure it could happen.
And often, they do not hear those simple words, thank you.
So maybe this is the invitation. Take a moment. Say thank you. Send a message. Share a memory. Let someone know that what they do matters, because it does. More than we sometimes realize. And in those small moments, something bigger is being built. Confidence, connection, and community.
This is how it grows. One moment at a time. One connection at a time. And across the North, those moments are happening every day. If you see an opportunity, take it. Make the call. Send the message. Offer the space.
